Senior Plant Scientist

  • Opportunity for a Plant Scientist to work in a new Controlled Environment Agriculture research facility.
  • Well backed AgriTech company developing new and cutting edge technologies for use in the CEA domain.

  • Demonstrable Plant Science experience and a track record of delivering research results (this could be from pursuing an academic route - PhD, post-doc, etc - or equivalent experience gained through other routes).
  • Expertise in Plant Physiology, Stress Responses and Phenotyping.
  • Exposure to one or more focus crops - these are herbs, leafy greens, strawberries, tomatoes.
  • Able to work in a start-up environment, playing a part from the start in the development of a brand new growth facility.
  • NICE TO HAVE (not essential): specific exposure to Controlled Environment Agriculture activities, such as Vertical Farming or Greenhouses.

We need to shift the way that we assess fresh produce and food quality in order to deliver a sustainable food system - and prioritise nutrition and taste, over uniformity in shape and size. The Controlled Environment Agriculture and Vertical Farming sectors are helping us to do this; but problems persist around the feasibility and affordability of technologies and solutions in that domain.

This AgriTech company, in rapid growth mode and recent recipients of significant financial backing, are looking to tackle these problems by devising and developing sophisticated and accurate technology solutions that will aid Farmer and Grower decision making - with a specific focus on CEA environments. Their mission, by developing everything in house, is to deliver software, data and AI solutions that are cost-efficient, easy to use, and require minimal hardware and machinery.

Effective and leading-edge research is central to what they do, hence they have just moved into a brand new growing facility where they can create Controlled Agriculture and Vertical Farming environments in which to run technology and crop growth trials and research.

A Plant Scientist is therefore required, potentially up to a senior level (various experience levels will be considered), with extensive experience in Plant Science research and trials who can plan and run experimental growth campaigns in their new facility. Your experience could could from academia and related research experience, for example from a PhD, or from a less academic route but where relevant experience has been generated in other areas such as industry.

As a key hire within a small, albeit fast growing, team, you will need to be comfortable operating in a position of responsibility in start-up environment - where ambiguity and unpredictability can be common place.

Specific CEA related experience would be an added bonus but not essential, the role could equally be a good fit for somebody with an interest to get involved in this domain!
